Metal Roofing
Standing seam and steel shingle roofs for Calgary homes, garages and acreage outbuildings, installed and repaired by a local, HAAG-certified team that knows hail, heavy snow and chinooks.
Metal roofing in Calgary, built for our weather
A metal roof is one of the longest-lasting roofs you can put on a Calgary home. It sheds snow, stands up to hail better than standard asphalt, and handles chinook temperature swings without the cracking and granule loss that age shingles here. Total Exteriors has been roofing in the Calgary area since 2014, and our inspectors are HAAG-certified for hail damage assessment.
We install, repair and replace standing seam and steel shingle roofs on houses, garages and outbuildings, and we handle metal roof hail claims with your insurer. Still comparing materials? See our residential roofing page or our guide to standing seam metal roof applications.
Types of metal roofing we install
Standing seam metal roofing
Long steel panels run from ridge to eave and lock together at raised seams. The fasteners are hidden under the seams and the panels sit on clips that let the steel expand and contract, so there are very few exposed holes for water to find. Standing seam suits modern homes, low-slope sections and porches.
Steel shingles and stone-coated steel
Pressed steel panels shaped to look like shingles, shakes or tile. Stone-coated versions have a granule finish bonded to the steel, which helps hide minor marks. They give you the durability of steel without the look of a panel roof, and they are much lighter than concrete or clay tile.
Garages, shops and outbuildings
Detached garages, shops, barns and sheds on acreages around Calgary and Rocky View County often use ribbed steel panels with exposed screws. They are economical and quick to install. The screws and their rubber washers need checking every few years, and we replace damaged panels and trims after hail or wind.
How metal roofs handle Calgary hail, snow and chinooks
Hail and impact ratings
Many steel roofing products are tested to UL 2218 and carry a Class 4 rating, the same top impact class used for impact-resistant shingles. Class 4 means the product did not crack or split in the test. It does not mean it cannot dent, and large hail can still dent a metal roof.
That is why we separate cosmetic damage (dents that do not affect how the roof sheds water) from functional damage: punctures, split seams, chipped coating that exposes bare steel, bent flashings and loosened fasteners. Some policies exclude cosmetic dents on metal roofs, so check your wording.
Snow shedding and snow guards
Metal sheds snow quickly, which keeps weight off the roof but can drop a slab onto a walkway, deck or eavestrough. We add snow guards above entrances, walkways, decks and lower roofs, and wherever sliding snow would tear off the eavestroughs.
Chinook freeze–thaw cycles
A chinook can push temperatures well above freezing within hours, then the cold returns overnight. Standing seam clips let panels move without stressing fasteners, and an ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and valleys protects the deck if meltwater backs up. Attic ventilation still matters, as our chinook roof damage guide explains.
Energy use and lifespan
Lighter, reflective colours reduce summer heat build-up in the attic. In a heating-heavy climate like Calgary’s, insulation and ventilation do more for your energy bills than roof colour, so we check both. Metal roofing typically lasts 40 to 70 years, against roughly 15 to 25 years for asphalt shingles here (see how long a roof lasts in Calgary).
Metal roofing vs asphalt shingles, and what it costs
Metal vs asphalt shingles
- Lifespan: a metal roof can outlast two or three asphalt roofs.
- Hail: metal resists cracking and granule loss; asphalt bruises and sheds granules, which shortens its life.
- Snow: metal sheds snow; shingles hold it, adding weight and ice dam risk.
- Weight: steel is light and rarely needs structural changes.
- Noise: over a solid deck, underlayment and an insulated attic, rain and hail are not much louder than on shingles.
- Upfront cost: asphalt is cheaper to install today.
What does a metal roof cost in Calgary?
Metal costs more upfront than asphalt. A typical asphalt replacement in Calgary runs about $8,000 to $18,000 (see our roof cost guide), and metal on the same house costs more. The price depends on the system, steel gauge and finish, the roof’s size, pitch and complexity, deck repairs, and the flashings and snow guards needed, so we quote every metal roof individually after measuring it.
Over the life of the roof the gap narrows: fewer replacements, fewer hail repairs and less maintenance. If your asphalt roof is being replaced through an insurance claim, you can usually upgrade to metal by paying the difference.
Metal roof repair and hail claims
Metal roof repairs
We repair leaks at flashings, vents, chimneys and skylights, replace dented or punctured panels, refasten or reseal loose trims, and touch up scratched coatings before rust starts. On exposed-fastener roofs we replace worn screws and washers. If a storm has opened up your roof, our emergency call-out service can cover it to stop further damage.
Hail damage claims on metal roofs
After a hailstorm, a HAAG-certified inspector checks every slope, measures dents and looks closely at seams, coatings, flashings, vents and eavestroughs. You get a photo report that separates cosmetic from functional damage, which is what your adjuster needs, and we meet the adjuster on site. Read about our insurance claims process and hail damage restoration, see our hail damage roof claim guide, or report a claim.
Our metal roofing process
1. Inspection and measuring
We inspect the deck, ventilation and flashings and measure every slope.
2. Options and written quote
You choose the system, profile and colour, and get an itemized written quote.
3. Tear-off and deck repair
We remove the old roof so the deck can be inspected, and replace soft or damaged sheathing.
4. Membranes and flashings
Ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and valleys, underlayment over the deck, then drip edge, valley and wall flashings.
5. Panels, trims and snow guards
Panels are fastened to the manufacturer’s instructions, followed by ridge caps, trims and snow guards.
6. Clean-up and walkthrough
We clean the site, sweep for metal offcuts and screws, and walk the finished roof with you.
Metal roofing FAQs
Is a metal roof worth it in Calgary?
For most homeowners who plan to stay, yes. It costs more upfront but can outlast two or three asphalt roofs, resists hail cracking and sheds snow. If you are moving within a few years, impact-resistant shingles may be better value.
Will hail dent a metal roof?
Large hail can dent any metal roof, including Class 4 products. Dents that do not affect performance are cosmetic; punctures, split seams and exposed steel are functional damage and need repair.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
We generally recommend a full tear-off, so the deck can be inspected and repaired and the membranes at the eaves and valleys installed properly.
Can you install a metal roof in winter?
Often, yes. Unlike asphalt shingles, metal panels do not need warm weather to seal, so we schedule around snow, ice and wind for crew safety. Read more on replacing a roof in winter.
