BP Vangard Shingles
Class 4 impact-resistant shingles installed in Calgary by Total Exteriors, a local roofing team with HAAG-certified inspectors and a 10-year workmanship warranty.
BP Vangard shingles in Calgary
BP Vangard is a 42-inch laminated asphalt shingle made by BP Canada for Western Canada. It meets the UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance standard, the highest class in that test, and it is made with SBS-modified asphalt, a rubberized blend that stays flexible through cold snaps and chinook temperature swings.
That matters in Calgary. The city sits in Hailstorm Alley, and many neighbourhoods have had their roofs replaced more than once in the past decade. A Class 4 shingle is built to survive the kind of hail that cracks standard shingles, and some insurers offer a premium discount for Class 4 roofs, so check with your broker. Total Exteriors has been roofing in the Calgary area since 2016, and we install Vangard on planned re-roofs and hail claim replacements alike. BP Vangard features and specifications
Class 4 impact resistance
Vangard meets UL 2218 Class 4, the top rating in the standard impact test: a 2-inch steel ball strikes the same spot twice, and the shingle must not crack. It is not hail-proof, but it is built for the storms that crack standard shingles.
SBS-modified asphalt
Each shingle has a fibreglass mat coated on both sides with SBS-modified asphalt and surfaced with mineral granules. BP says this improves durability, granule retention and resistance to temperature swings.
220 km/h wind warranty
BP’s wind warranty covers gusts up to 220 km/h (135 mph) with the standard installation method. Vangard also meets ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H for wind, and carries a Class A fire rating.
Larger 42-inch format
Each shingle measures 42 by 14 inches with a 6-inch exposure. BP says its laminated shingles are the largest on the market, which means fewer bundles and nails per roof.
Limited lifetime warranty
On an owner-occupied single-family home, Vangard carries BP’s limited lifetime warranty. For the first 15 years it covers defective shingles and the labour to install them; after that, coverage is prorated.
Weather-Tite system option
When the roof is built as a BP Weather-Tite system, with BP eave protection, underlayment, starter, shingles and hip and ridge, BP adds broader coverage, including all components of a defective area for the first five years. Ask us about it when we quote.
Vangard vs standard shingles and BP Mystique
Vangard vs standard architectural shingles
- Impact rating: Vangard is UL 2218 Class 4; most standard architectural shingles carry no impact rating.
- Asphalt: Vangard uses SBS-modified asphalt, which stays more flexible in the cold than regular asphalt.
- Insurance: some insurers discount premiums for Class 4 roofs; standard shingles do not qualify.
- Looks: both are laminated shingles, so from the street they look much alike.
- Upfront cost: Vangard costs more than a standard architectural shingle.
Vangard vs BP Mystique
BP Mystique is a laminated shingle with oversized tabs and three-dimensional shadow bands, offered in eight colours. It is rated Class 3 for impact under FM 4473, one step below Vangard, and its standard wind warranty is 180 km/h, or 220 km/h with BP’s high-wind installation. Both carry BP’s limited lifetime warranty.
We install both. If hail protection is your top priority, Vangard is the stronger choice. If you prefer Mystique’s look or one of its colours, we can quote the two side by side.

Upgrading to Vangard during a hail claim
Pay the difference, not for a whole roof
When hail damage is covered, insurance normally pays to replace your shingles with materials of like kind and quality. If you want Vangard instead, you usually pay only the difference in cost, not the price of a new roof. Tell us early so the upgrade can be priced and ordered with the rest of the job. Our impact-resistant shingles guide explains how upgrades and insurance discounts work.
We work through the claim with you
A HAAG-certified inspector checks every slope and documents the damage with photos, which is what your adjuster needs, and we meet the adjuster on site. Read about our insurance claims process, see our hail damage roof claim guide, or report a claim.

BP Vangard shingles FAQ
Are BP Vangard shingles Class 4?
Yes. BP Canada lists Vangard as meeting the UL 2218 Class 4 impact resistance standard, the highest class in that test.
Are Vangard shingles hail-proof?
No shingle is. Class 4 means the shingle passed impact testing without cracking. Very large or wind-driven hail can still damage it, and hail can scuff the surface or knock off granules.
Will a Vangard roof lower my insurance premium?
It may. Some insurers offer a discount for Class 4 roofs, but the amount and the proof they need vary. Check with your broker before you choose shingles, and keep your invoice when the roof is done.
Can I upgrade to Vangard during a hail claim?
Usually, yes. Insurance pays for like kind and quality, and you pay the difference to upgrade. Tell us early so the upgrade can be priced with the claim.
What warranty comes with a Vangard roof?
BP’s limited lifetime warranty on the shingles for owner-occupied single-family homes, plus our 10-year workmanship warranty on the installation.
What colours does BP Vangard come in?
Five: Silver Grey, Twilight Grey, Autumn Brown, Shadow Black and Weathered Rock. You can preview each one in the colour selector above.
