Euroshield Rubber Roofing in Calgary

Euroshield is a rubber roofing panel made from recycled tires. It is manufactured in southeast Calgary by G.E.M. Inc., the company Henry Kamphuis founded in 1999 to keep old tires out of landfills. Total Exteriors installs Euroshield Beaumont Shake on Calgary-area homes, alongside BP Vangard and BP Mystique shingles.

It suits our weather. Every Euroshield profile carries a Class 4 impact rating for hail, the interlocking panels are wind tested far beyond a chinook gust, and rubber does not absorb moisture, rot or curl the way aging cedar does. You keep the shadow lines and texture of a cedar shake roof without the treatments and patch repairs. Still comparing materials? See our residential roofing page or our guide to impact-resistant shingles. If you prefer a shingle, see BP Vangard shingles.

Beaumont Shake: Profile and Colours

Beaumont Shake is the Euroshield profile we install. It is the thinner, lighter of Euroshield’s two shake profiles, and Euroshield prices it between asphalt shingles and premium roofs such as cedar and metal. The company also makes Ranchlands Shake, Vermont Slate, Vermont Slate HP and Rundle Slate.

Euroshield Beaumont Shake

Vertical grooves, a cedar grain and a hand-split texture give Beaumont Shake the look of real wood shakes, with crisp shadow lines and a uniform pattern across the roof.

  • Interlocking panels about 1/2" thick at the butt edge
  • 9" exposure, 40 panels per roofing square
  • About 240 lb per square, close to asphalt shingles
  • For roof slopes of 4/12 and steeper
  • A natural fit when replacing a cedar shake roof

4 Colours

Euroshield colour range

Beaumont Shake comes in Grey, Black, Brown and Driftwood. The colour runs through the whole panel and mellows evenly in the sun, so look at a physical sample before you choose.

Why Euroshield Works on Calgary Roofs

Class 4 hail rating

Every Euroshield profile is UL 2218 Class 4 impact rated and listed by QAI, the top class in that test. Euroshield’s warranty covers its panels against hail up to 2 inches in diameter.

Wind tested to 160 mph

Beaumont Shake’s interlocking panels passed modified ASTM D3161 wind testing at 160 mph for two hours of continuous exposure, well beyond the gusts a chinook brings.

Made in Calgary from recycled tires

Euroshield panels are about 70% recycled tire rubber and roughly 95% recycled content overall, made at the company’s plant in southeast Calgary.

Colour that will not wear off

There are no granules or paint to lose. The colour runs through the full thickness of the panel, with carbon black for UV resistance, so a scuff does not show a different shade.

Low upkeep, walkable

Rubber does not soak up water, rot or need treatments. Euroshield says you can walk on the roof without damaging it, and cleaning is a low-pressure rinse with water.

Transferable lifetime warranty

Euroshield roofs carry a transferable limited lifetime warranty from the manufacturer, registered within 90 days of installation, plus our 10-year workmanship warranty.

Euroshield vs Cedar Shake vs Class 4 Asphalt

How Beaumont Shake compares with the two roofs Calgary homeowners most often weigh it against. Costs are relative; we quote every roof after measuring it.

Euroshield Beaumont Shake

  • Look: cedar shake texture and shadow lines.
  • Hail: UL 2218 Class 4.
  • Upkeep: no rot or treatments; rinse with water.
  • Weight: about 240 lb per square.
  • Warranty: transferable limited lifetime.
  • Cost: between asphalt and cedar.

Cedar shake

  • Look: natural wood that greys as it ages.
  • Hail: dried-out shakes split and crack.
  • Upkeep: regular treatment and repairs; prone to moss, mould and rot.
  • Lifespan: about 30 to 50 years, shortened by Calgary’s climate.
  • Insurance: damage from age and wear may not be covered.
  • Cost: usually the highest of the three.

BP Vangard (Class 4 asphalt)

  • Look: a classic asphalt shingle roof.
  • Hail: Class 4 impact rating.
  • Upkeep: low, though granules wear over the years.
  • Warranty: manufacturer’s limited lifetime.
  • Cost: the lowest upfront of the three.

Replacing a Cedar Shake Roof with Euroshield

Cedar shake roofs last about 30 to 50 years, and Calgary’s severe climate shortens that. If your shakes are cupping, curling or splitting, Beaumont Shake keeps the look your house was designed around and ends the treatments and patch repairs.

What happens when we replace cedar

  • Full tear-off: every shake comes off so we can inspect the deck underneath.
  • Solid decking: many older cedar roofs are laid on spaced boards, which need solid sheathing before the new roof goes on. We check for this during the inspection.
  • Rot repair: rotten sheathing is replaced with 3/8″ sheathing at the per-sheet rate in your contract.
  • New roof system: membranes, flashings and vents, then interlocking Beaumont Shake panels.

Signs your cedar roof is done

  • Deformation: widespread cupping, warping, curling or splitting of the shakes.
  • Rot and decay: dark discolouration can be a sign of mould and rot.
  • Pests: gaps that let in carpenter ants, wasps, mice or birds.

Euroshield, Insurance and Hail Claims

Upgrading to Euroshield during a claim

When hail damage means a new roof, your policy normally pays for a like-for-like replacement. You can usually upgrade to Euroshield by paying the difference, which makes a claim a good time to move from cedar or standard asphalt to a Class 4 roof. Tell your adjuster before work starts.

Some insurers also offer a premium discount for Class 4 impact-rated roofs, so ask your provider whether yours does.

Hail damage inspections and claims

After a hailstorm, a HAAG-certified inspector checks every slope, flashing, vent and eavestrough. You get a photo report for your adjuster, and we meet the adjuster on site. Read about our insurance claims process and hail damage restoration, see our hail damage roof claim guide, or report a claim.
