Smartboard products offer high performance on exterior and interior wall systems. They are solid and monolithic substrates for air and vapour barriers. It is used as a sheathing and support for roofing and finishing systems as well as underlayment for ceramic tile in wet or dry areas.

What Is Smart Board?
“Smart board” is used for more than one building product. The Smartboard products described above are rigid boards used as sheathing, as a substrate behind air and vapour barriers and finishes, and as underlayment. Many homeowners also say “smart board siding” when they mean engineered wood siding and trim, such as LP SmartSide. Whichever product is on your home, the first step is to identify it correctly, because the repair method and the replacement material are different.

Why Cladding Takes a Beating in Calgary
Calgary sits in Canada’s hail alley, and summer storms can dent, crack or split cladding in minutes. Chinooks bring repeated freeze–thaw cycles that drive moisture into any unsealed edge or joint. The strong high-altitude sun fades and breaks down finishes, and west of the city, Cochrane’s westerly winds loosen panels and trim. Engineered wood and Smart Board products perform well here when cut edges are sealed, clearances are kept and the paint is maintained. When those details are missed, boards can swell, soften or flake.

Repair or replacement?
Isolated damage can usually be repaired by replacing individual boards and repainting to match. When damage covers several walls, the product is discontinued, or water has got behind the cladding, replacing full elevations is often the better long-term fix.

What is Smart Board used for in construction?

Is Smart Board siding a good choice for Calgary?
Yes, when it is installed and finished properly. Sealed edges, correct clearances and well-maintained paint let it handle freeze–thaw and moisture. Large hail can still dent or crack it.
Can damaged Smart Board be repaired, or does it all need replacing?
Individual boards can usually be replaced and repainted. Full replacement is only needed when damage is widespread, the product cannot be matched or there is moisture damage behind it.
Does insurance cover hail-damaged cladding?
Many Alberta policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, but coverage and depreciation vary, so check with your insurer. We inspect, document the damage and work with your adjuster.
