Exterior Stucco
If your home has been hit by hail, you may notice discoloured spots, dents, chips or cracks in your paint or siding. If you have a stucco home, look for cracking, chipping and holes in the stucco.
While Stucco is durable and reliable siding material, hail, wind, heavy rain and flying debris are common causes of exterior damage to Stucco siding.
If your home has been hit by hail, you may notice discoloured spots, dents, chips or cracks in your paint or siding. If you have a stucco home, look for cracking, chipping and holes in the stucco.
Stucco siding is typically resistant to moderate weather conditions but elevated or severe storms can cause serious damage.
The most common damage to stucco is dents and holes that are punched into the surface. Typically some holes are larger and easier to see, however, it is the smaller ones that require a closer inspection to be detected.
Stucco damage is a serious issue. It can compromise the exterior of your house as it can potentially allow water intrusion behind the stucco which can cause serious, long term damages.
During hail and wind storms your exterior EIFS or Synthetic Stucco can crack, chip and dent. This damage is often noticeable because an area of the wall will feel soft, or be dented in.
There might also be an area that has numerous small cracks radiating in a pattern similar to a spider web. This evidence of damage means that the foam backing behind the exterior EIFS or stucco coat will have to be removed and replaced. It’s more than a simple patch-up job.

Stucco Repair and Replacement in Calgary
Total Exteriors repairs, patches and replaces exterior stucco on homes across Calgary and nearby communities. We work on traditional cement stucco and on synthetic stucco systems (EIFS), from small hail chips to full wall remediation where water has got behind the finish. Our HAAG-certified inspectors document hail and wind damage for insurance claims, and we also take on private stucco restoration projects.
Traditional Stucco vs EIFS (Synthetic Stucco)
Most Calgary homes with a stucco finish have one of two systems. Traditional cement stucco is a hard, multi-coat finish over wire lath. It is strong, but it can crack as the house settles and through repeated freeze–thaw cycles. EIFS, or synthetic stucco, is a thin acrylic finish over foam insulation board. It insulates well but is softer, so hail can dent or puncture it and expose the foam. Knowing which one you have matters, because the repair method and the cost are different.
Common Stucco Problems in Calgary
- Hail damage: chips, pock marks, holes and spider-web cracking, usually on walls facing the storm.
- Freeze–thaw cracking: chinooks melt snow against the walls and it refreezes overnight. Water that gets into hairline cracks expands and widens them.
- Water intrusion: staining, white powdery deposits (efflorescence), bulging or soft spots, often below windows, where a roof meets a wall and near the ground.
- Wind and debris: dents and gouges from branches and debris thrown by high winds.
- Failed sealant: dried-out caulking around windows, doors, vents and other penetrations.
Stucco Repair vs Stucco Replacement
Small chips and hairline cracks on otherwise sound stucco can usually be patched and recoated. Repair gets harder when a patch has to blend into a large, weathered wall, or when there is moisture damage behind the surface. Replacement makes sense when cracking is widespread, the wall feels soft or wet, sheathing is damaged, or EIFS foam has been crushed across large areas. Our guide stucco repair vs replacement: what Calgarians should know covers this in more detail.
Stucco Repair Cost in Calgary
As a general guide, stucco repair in Calgary typically costs about $8 to $15 per square foot, and full stucco replacement about $25 to $50 per square foot. Where your project falls depends on wall height and access, the type of stucco, how much hidden moisture damage there is, and how much of the wall needs a new colour coat to blend. We give you a written quote after the inspection.

Hail Damage to Stucco and Insurance
Small hail punctures in stucco are easy to miss from the ground, but they let water in. Have your stucco checked after any significant hailstorm, ideally along with the roof. You can report a claim online or read about our hail damage and wind damage repairs. If water is getting into the house, use our emergency call-out service. If you are comparing materials for a re-clad, see vinyl siding and Hardiboard siding, or compare every option on our siding replacement page.

Exterior Stucco FAQ
Can stucco be repaired in winter?
Stucco and finish coats need above-freezing temperatures to cure properly, so most stucco work is done from spring to fall. In cold weather we can make temporary repairs to keep water out, then finish the wall when conditions allow.
Will a stucco patch match the rest of my wall?
We match colour and texture as closely as possible, but a patch on older, faded stucco can still show. Recoating the whole wall from corner to corner gives the most even result.
How do I know if water is behind my stucco?
Watch for stains running down from cracks or windows, white powdery deposits, bulging, or areas that feel soft when pressed. Inside, look for damp drywall or peeling paint on exterior walls. Any of these is worth an inspection.
Does insurance cover hail-damaged stucco?
Many Alberta home policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, but terms vary, so check with your insurer. We can inspect, document the damage and work with your adjuster.
