Wind Damage Restoration in Calgary

Chinook gusts and summer storms lift shingles, strip soffit and blow siding off Calgary homes every year. Total Exteriors repairs wind damage to roofs, siding, soffit, fascia, eavestroughs, decks and fences, with 24/7 emergency tarping and help with your insurance claim. We are a credible, reliable and HAAG-certified contractor who will be around long after the repairs are done.

Chinooks and Windstorms: What Wind Does to Calgary Homes

Wind can wreak havoc in any season here in Alberta. In winter, chinooks bring warm, gusty westerly winds down off the Rockies, and in summer, thunderstorms bring sudden downbursts, often with hail. Homes on the western edge of the city, in Cochrane and on open acreages in Rocky View County tend to take the strongest gusts, but no part of the region is fully sheltered.

Wind damage usually starts at an edge: the first row of shingles at the eaves, a ridge cap, a loose piece of soffit or the end of a siding run. Once wind gets under an edge it can peel back much more, and each gust after that makes the opening bigger. That is why small wind damage is worth fixing quickly.

Often your insurance company will contact us to inspect the damage and prepare an estimate for the repair. Repairing that damage is our area of expertise.

Wind Damage to Shingles: Lifted, Creased and Missing

Asphalt shingles are held down by nails and a strip of sealant that bonds each shingle to the one below. Strong gusts can break that seal and lift the shingle. If it bends far enough, it creases across the top, and a creased shingle no longer lies flat or sheds water properly. Repeated lifting loosens the nails until whole shingles tear off and end up in the yard.

Creases are easy to miss from the ground. Look for a straight line across a shingle, shingles that sit slightly raised, or missing ridge caps. Shingles installed late in the year may not seal until warm weather, which leaves them exposed to winter chinooks.

Roof wind damage we repair:

Our chinook damage guide explains how winter wind and freeze–thaw cycles affect shingles and sealants. For larger buildings, see commercial roofing.

Soffit, Fascia and Siding Blown Off in a Windstorm

Soffit and fascia sit right where wind meets the roof edge. Loose soffit panels rattle, slide out of their channels and blow away, leaving the attic open to birds, snow and rain. Aluminum fascia can peel back from the board behind it. Siding fails in a similar way. Vinyl panels unlock from the row below and blow off in sections, usually from corners and gable ends, and loose trim or flashing lets water get behind the wall.

Wind damage we repair on walls and roof edges:

Replacement panels need to match what is already on the house. We look for an exact match first and tell you plainly when a full wall should be redone. See our siding page for full replacement options.

Emergency Tarping and Fence Repairs After a Windstorm

Fences are often the first thing to go in a Calgary windstorm. A long run of solid privacy fence acts like a sail, so posts lean or snap and panels blow out, especially where posts have rotted at ground level. Deck railings, privacy screens and pergolas can work loose, and falling branches damage roofs, decks and eavestroughs on the way down. We repair and rebuild decks and fences damaged by wind.

If wind has opened up your roof or broken a window, call our 24/7 emergency line at (403) 407-0208. Our emergency call-out service can tarp the roof and board up openings to keep water out until permanent repairs are approved.

After a Windstorm, Check These First

Once the wind has died down, walk around the house and look for:

  • Shingles, ridge caps or pieces of roofing in the yard.
  • Shingles that sit raised or have a crease across them.
  • Loose or missing soffit, fascia and siding panels.
  • Eavestroughs pulled away from the fascia.
  • Leaning fence posts and loose deck railings.
  • Water stains on ceilings or wet insulation in the attic.

Stay off the roof in high wind or when it is wet. If you can’t see something safely from the ground, leave it to us.

What to Do Before Repairs Start

A few simple steps protect the house and your claim:

  1. Photograph the damage and debris before cleanup.
  2. Call our emergency line if the roof or a wall is open.
  3. Report the damage to your insurer or broker.
  4. Book a free inspection with our HAAG-certified team.
  5. Keep receipts for tarping and other emergency work.

For winter storms, our winter roof emergencies guide covers ice, snow and leaks.

How to Prevent Wind Damage to Your Roof

Most wind damage comes back to how the roof was installed. Shingle manufacturers publish high-wind installation instructions that usually call for six nails per shingle instead of four, placed accurately in the nailing strip. Nails driven too high or at an angle are a common reason shingles blow off. Starter strips with sealant along the eaves and rakes, and well-fastened ridge caps, protect the edges where wind gets in first.

When you replace your roof, ask about shingles with high wind ratings. Architectural shingles generally carry much higher wind ratings than older three-tab shingles, and Class 4 shingles also stand up better to hail. Our impact-resistant shingles guide compares options, and roof repair or replace? helps you decide when a damaged roof is due.

Securing Siding, Soffit and Trees

Siding stays on when it is fastened correctly, locked fully into the row below, and finished with well-secured trim at corners and gable ends. Soffit panels should be fastened in their channels, not just slid in. A yearly walk-around to snap loose panels back in place and re-secure trim stops a small gap from becoming a blown-off wall.

Trim branches that overhang the roof, remove dead trees that could fall on the house, and tie down or put away patio furniture, trampolines and barbecues before a forecast windstorm. After any major wind event, get your roof inspected by a trained professional so small problems are fixed before the next one.

Does Home Insurance Cover Wind Damage?

Wind is a commonly covered peril. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, most home insurance policies cover wind damage, including damage from flying debris and falling trees and branches, and water that gets in through openings caused by wind.

Deductibles, limits and exclusions vary, and we are not insurance adjusters. Only your insurance company representatives can interpret your policy.

What Your Insurer May Consider

If shingles blow off a roof that was close to the end of its life, your policy may not pay the full cost to replace it. If wear and tear made the roof more vulnerable, depreciation may be applied to your settlement, and damage caused by regular wear and tear is usually not covered.

If a windstorm knocks a tree onto your house, your policy will often cover the damage to the home but usually not removing or replacing the tree, and many policies limit what they will pay. Damage to radio antennas and satellite dishes is also commonly excluded.

Coverage often depends on the age of your roof, the area you live in and other factors, so check the specifics with your insurance agent or broker. Insurers often call us to inspect the damage and prepare a repair estimate, and we can meet your adjuster on site. See our insurance claims page or report a claim to get started.

Wind Damage Repair Questions Answered

Does home insurance cover wind damage to my roof?

Most home insurance policies cover wind damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, but deductibles, limits and depreciation on older roofs vary. Check the details with your insurer or broker. We can’t interpret your coverage, but we can document the damage for your claim.

Can a few missing shingles be repaired, or do I need a new roof?

A few missing or creased shingles can often be replaced if matching shingles are available and the rest of the roof is sound. If the damage is widespread or the shingles are brittle with age, replacement may make more sense.

Why do shingles blow off a newer roof?

Usually because of how they were fastened or because the sealant strips never bonded. Too few nails, nails placed too high, or shingles installed in cold weather that had not sealed before a chinook can all let wind lift them.

What should I do if wind opens up my roof at night?

Call our 24/7 emergency line at (403) 407-0208. We can tarp the roof to keep water out, then handle the permanent repairs once your insurer approves the scope.

Do you repair fences and decks damaged by wind?

Yes. We repair and rebuild wood, vinyl and composite fences and decks damaged by wind or falling trees.

Do you repair wind damage outside Calgary?

Yes. We repair wind damage in Airdrie, Cochrane, Chestermere, Crossfield, Irricana, Beiseker and across Rocky View County.
