Calgary Sits in Canada’s Hail Alley

Calgary sits at the southern end of the stretch of Alberta between Calgary and Red Deer often called hail alley, where summer thunderstorms build quickly over the foothills and drop hail more often than almost anywhere else in Canada. Most hail falls between June and August, and one storm can damage thousands of homes in an afternoon. The August 5, 2024 hailstorm caused nearly $2.8 billion in insured damage and more than 130,000 claims, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

The Total Exteriors management team has over 30 years experience dealing with hail claims of all types. We have done it all, from replacing a few asphalt shingles on a home to completely removing and replacing complicated roofing systems on commercial structures.

Along with great workmanship, we are HAAG certified, follow proper safety protocols and are fully insured. In the roofing and insurance industries, HAAG certification shows that an inspector has been trained to assess storm damage to an industry standard, developed and taught by practising forensic engineers. That carries weight if you ever find yourself at odds with another’s findings.

Hail damage is often hard to see from the ground, and a roof can be damaged regardless of its age or condition. A bruised shingle may take months or years to leak, but most insurers set time limits for reporting damage, so have the roof checked soon after a storm.

Most insurance carriers prefer a qualified professional contractor to verify damage before a claim is filed to prevent unnecessary claims. The Project Managers at Total Exteriors are trained to identify storm damage in accordance with industry standards and are available to provide a comprehensive analysis without cost or obligation.

Prevention is the best way to reduce hail damage. Here are a few tips on how to protect your property and family when a storm hits:

N

If you are told to evacuate or take cover, do it!

N

If there’s a storm brewing, keep up with its progress through local news or weather channels.

N

Secure all glass openings (windows, sun roof) to limit additional damages

N

Make sure outdoor furniture and fixtures and all vehicles are brought in to prevent them from being damage

N

Stay away from glass windows and doors and seek refuge in an interior room with no windows

N

Avoid using electrical appliances

N

Take care of your pets: A storm can be a frightening experience, and they could injure themselves or you if they panic

N

Do not light candles or lanterns – they could get blown over causing a fire

N

Never go out during the storm – flying debris can cause severe injuries

N

After the storm clears, and you come out, beware of downed power lines and gas leaks

N

Stay away from heavily damaged areas.

Hail Damage Roof Repair for Shingles, Metal, Tile and Flat Roofs

Asphalt shingles take the worst of a hailstorm. Hail knocks off the granules, bruises or cracks the mat underneath, and breaks the seal strips that hold each shingle down. The marks can look like dark spots or soft dents, and they often don’t leak until the next windstorm or chinook thaw finds the weak spot.

Metal roofs usually keep water out after hail, but panels and trim dent, and on standing seam roofs those dents are permanent. Concrete and clay tile can crack or chip, and cedar shakes split along the grain. On flat roofs, hail bruises or punctures the membrane and cracks seams around drains and rooftop units.

Our hail damage shingles guide shows what bruising and granule loss look like up close. For apartment, retail and industrial buildings, see our commercial roofing page.

Hail Damage to Siding: Vinyl, Hardie Board and Stucco

When hail comes in on the wind, as it often does in Calgary storms, the siding takes the hits. Vinyl is the most vulnerable. It cracks, splits and holes, and it gets more brittle in cool weather, so a summer storm on a cold evening can do more damage than you might expect. Hardie board and other fibre cement siding handle impacts better but can chip at the edges and lose paint. Stucco can crack, chip or show round impact marks, and any crack that lets water in behind the finish should be fixed before winter.

Siding we repair and replace after hail:

Matching faded siding is the hardest part of a partial repair. We look for an exact match first and tell you plainly when a full wall should be redone. Read is vinyl siding hail-proof? to see what hail does to vinyl, and stucco repair vs replacement for stucco homes.

Eavestroughs, Soffit, Fascia, Windows and Decks After Hail

Aluminum eavestroughs and downspouts dent easily, and heavy hail can bend them out of slope so water no longer runs to the downspouts. Soffit panels crack or get punched through, and aluminum fascia dents along the roof edge. Window screens tear, vinyl frames and exterior capping crack, and larger hail can break glass.

On decks and fences, hail splinters softer wood, cracks vinyl and composite railings, and strips the finish from stained or painted surfaces. Paint and stain on trim, doors and wood siding can chip down to bare wood, which then weathers quickly.

Other hail repairs we handle:

Granules collecting in your eavestroughs are also a clue that the roof above was hit. Our eavestrough replacement guide covers when to repair and when to replace.

How to Check for Hail Damage Safely After a Storm

Stay off the roof. Wet or granule-covered shingles are slippery, and hail damage is hard to judge even when you are standing on it. Most of what you need can be seen from the ground. Take dated photos of anything you find, and if you can do it safely, photograph a few hailstones next to a coin or ruler. Those photos help your claim.

If you’re unsure, book a free inspection. Our project managers are trained to identify storm damage in accordance with industry standards and will give you an assessment without cost or obligation. Our exterior inspection checklist walks through each part of the house.

What You Can Check From the Ground

Walk around the house once the storm has passed and look for:

  • Dents in eavestroughs, downspouts, roof vents and window frames.
  • Granules washed out at the downspout outlets.
  • Holes, cracks or chips in siding on the side the storm came from.
  • Torn screens, cracked capping or broken glass.
  • Chipped paint or splintered wood on decks, fences and trim.
  • Dents on vehicles, sheds or the air conditioner.

If there is a leak or an opening in the roof, call our 24/7 line for emergency tarping.

What to Do in the First 48 Hours

A few simple steps protect the house and your claim:

  1. Photograph damage on every side of the house.
  2. Cover broken windows and move belongings away from leaks.
  3. Call your insurer or broker to report the damage.
  4. Book a free inspection with our HAAG-certified team.
  5. Keep receipts for any emergency repairs.

Be careful with door-knockers who appear after a storm. Our storm chaser guide explains what to watch for.

How a Hail Damage Claim Works With Us

We are contractors, not adjusters, so we can’t interpret your policy. What we can do is make sure the damage is found, documented and repaired properly. Most insurance carriers prefer a qualified contractor to verify damage before a claim goes ahead, and our written report gives your adjuster the evidence.

  1. You report the damage to your insurer and to us.
  2. Our HAAG-certified inspector documents every roof slope and wall.
  3. We meet your adjuster on site and agree on the scope.
  4. Materials are ordered and the work is scheduled.
  5. We finish with a walk-through and site cleanup.

See our insurance claims page for how we work with insurers, read our hail damage roof insurance claim guide, or report a claim online.

How Long Hail Damage Repairs Take

In a normal season, a straightforward claim usually moves from your first call to the adjuster’s inspection within one to three weeks. After a large storm, insurers and contractors are both stretched, so book your inspection early to get in the queue.

Once the scope is approved, most asphalt re-roofs on a detached home take one to three days after the crew starts, weather permitting. Siding can take longer when a colour has to be ordered to match. After a major hailstorm, the wait to get on the schedule is usually longer than the job itself.

If the roof is open, we tarp it right away so the house stays dry while the claim is processed. Roofs can be replaced in cooler months too; see can you replace a roof in winter?

Hail Damage Repair or Full Replacement?

Not every hailstorm means a new roof. Scattered damage on a newer roof can often be repaired by replacing individual shingles, as long as matching shingles are available and the shingles around them still seal properly. When damage is spread across most slopes, the shingle line has been discontinued, or the roof is already near the end of its life, a full replacement usually makes more sense. Your insurer decides the scope, and depreciation may be applied to an older roof.

Siding works the same way: a few panels can be swapped, but if the colour has faded or is no longer made, a full wall may need to be redone. Our roof repair or replace guide goes into more detail, and our roof cost guide covers typical prices.

Impact-Resistant Upgrades After Hail

If hail has forced a roof replacement, it is a good time to consider Class 4 impact-resistant shingles. They are built to resist hail better than standard shingles, and some insurers offer a premium discount for them, so ask your broker before you choose. During an approved claim you can often upgrade by paying the difference in cost. Metal roofing is another long-lasting option, though it can still dent.

For walls, fibre cement and engineered cladding handle hail better than standard vinyl. Our impact-resistant shingles guide compares roof options, and vinyl vs Hardie board compares siding.

Hail Damage Repair Questions Answered

Does home insurance cover hail damage in Alberta?

Standard home insurance policies generally cover hail damage, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, but deductibles, limits and depreciation on older roofs vary. Check the details with your insurer or broker. We can’t interpret your coverage, but we can document the damage for your claim.

How soon after a hailstorm should I get my roof inspected?

As soon as it is safe. Most insurers set time limits for reporting damage, and a hail-bruised roof can start leaking months later. A prompt inspection gives you dated evidence that ties the damage to the storm.

Can I see hail damage on my roof from the ground?

Sometimes, but usually not. Dents in eavestroughs, vents and siding are easier to spot and suggest the roof was hit too. Bruised shingles and broken seal strips usually need a close inspection by a trained inspector.

Will my whole roof be replaced after hail?

It depends on how widespread the damage is, the age of the roof and whether matching shingles are available. Your insurer decides the scope, and our report gives them the evidence. Small, isolated damage is often repaired rather than replaced.

Does hail damage vinyl siding?

Yes. Vinyl can crack, split or hole in hail, and it is more brittle in cool weather. Fibre cement and stucco hold up better but can still chip or crack in large hail.

Are impact-resistant shingles worth it in Calgary?

For many Calgary homes, yes. Class 4 shingles are built to resist hail better than standard shingles, and some insurers offer premium discounts for them. Our impact-resistant shingles guide has the details.
