Siding Installation, Repair & Replacement in Calgary
New siding, storm repairs and full re-sides for Calgary homes in vinyl, Hardie fibre cement, LP SmartSide, stucco and stone. HAAG-certified inspections, insurance claim support and written estimates from a local team working since 2014.
Calgary siding contractor for repairs, replacement and new installs
Siding sheds rain and snow, keeps wind out of the wall, protects the sheathing and insulation behind it and takes the first hit when hail comes in sideways. When it fails, water can reach the wall long before a stain shows up inside.
Siding repair. We replace cracked, holed or blown-off panels and boards, reseal joints and trim, and fix the flashing and house wrap behind them.
Siding replacement. We strip worn or storm-damaged siding from one wall or the whole house and install new material, often with foam insulation added behind it.
New siding installation. We help you move to a different material, such as vinyl to fibre cement or engineered wood, as part of an exterior renovation.
We have been BBB accredited with an A+ rating since 2017, our inspectors are HAAG-certified, and every job starts with a free inspection and a written estimate. Call (403) 313-4932 or send us a message.
Siding materials we install and repair
Most Calgary homes are clad in one of the materials below, and many use two or three on the same house. Pick a material to see how we install, repair and replace it.
Vinyl Siding
Calgary’s most common siding: affordable, low-maintenance and repairable panel by panel, but prone to cracking in hail, especially in cold weather.
Hardie Board Fibre Cement
Dense fibre cement lap, panel and shingle siding that resists rot, fire and impact better than vinyl, with a paint finish that needs periodic care.
LP SmartSide and Smart Board
Engineered wood siding and trim with a real wood look. It performs well here when cut edges are sealed, clearances are kept and the paint is maintained.
Exterior Stucco
Crack, chip and impact repair through to full restucco, matched to your existing texture and colour.
Stone Veneer
Manufactured stone on walls, columns and entries, installed and repaired with proper drainage and flashing behind it.
Commercial Cladding
Siding and cladding for condo complexes, retail units and commercial buildings, including storm damage claims.
Siding materials compared for Calgary weather
Every one of these materials works in Calgary when it is installed properly. The differences are in how each one handles hail, how much upkeep it needs and what it costs.
| Material | Hail resistance | Upkeep | Typical lifespan | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | Moderate. Can crack or hole in large hail, especially in cold weather | Very low. Rinse occasionally | 20–30+ years | $ (about $6–$10/sq ft installed) |
| Hardie fibre cement | High. Can chip and lose paint at edges | Low to moderate. Caulking and repainting over time | 30–50 years | $$ |
| LP SmartSide (engineered wood) | Good. Can dent under large hail | Moderate. Keep paint and sealed edges in good shape | Decades, with paint upkeep | $$ |
| Stucco | Good on solid walls. Can crack or chip at impact points | Low to moderate. Seal cracks; recoat every 7–10 years | About 40–50 years | $$–$$$ |
| Stone veneer | High. Individual stones rarely break | Low. Check mortar joints and flashing | Decades, with sound flashing | $$$ |
Costs vary with wall area, trim detail, access and removal of old siding. Installed vinyl typically runs about $6 to $10 per square foot in Calgary (see what new vinyl siding costs), and stucco repair about $8 to $15 per square foot (see stucco repair vs replacement). For the two most common choices side by side, read vinyl vs Hardiboard for Calgary homes. Commercial cladding is quoted per building.
When to repair or replace your siding
Signs you need new siding
Walk around the house once a year, ideally in spring after the last chinook, and look for:
- Cracked, holed or missing panels, usually on the walls that faced the last storm
- Warped, buckled or loose siding, or pieces that rattle in the wind
- Soft, swollen or flaking board edges near the ground, decks or roof lines
- Faded, chalky or patchy colour that no longer matches from wall to wall
- Gaps at corners, J-channel and window trim, or water stains on interior walls
- Stucco cracks wider than a hairline, or loose stone around entries
Siding repair or replacement?
If the damage is limited to a few panels or boards and the material can still be matched, a repair is usually the sensible choice. When damage is spread across several walls, the siding is near the end of its life, or the colour and profile are discontinued, replacing whole elevations or the entire house is often better value. It is also the best time to add foam insulation behind the new siding.
Hail damage and insurance claims
Calgary sits in Canada’s hail alley, and the storm that damages a roof usually marks the siding too. Vinyl cracks and punctures, fibre cement and engineered wood chip and lose paint, and stucco can crack around impact points. Damage on the walls that faced the storm is easy to miss from the street.
Our HAAG-certified inspectors photograph and measure every elevation, write a scope your adjuster can work from and meet the adjuster at the house. Start with our exterior inspection checklist, read how vinyl siding holds up to hail, see our hail damage and wind damage services, or report a claim online.
How a siding project works with Total Exteriors
Built for Calgary weather
Chinooks can swing temperatures through repeated freeze–thaw cycles in a single winter, and strong high-altitude sun breaks down finishes. We leave proper expansion gaps on vinyl, seal edges and keep clearances on fibre cement and engineered wood, and flash windows and transitions so water drains out of the wall rather than into it.
One team for the whole wall
Siding work often touches the soffit, fascia, eavestroughs and windows. One crew handles all of it, so the trim details line up. See soffit and fascia, eavestroughs and doors and windows.
Our siding process
1. Free inspection. A HAAG-certified inspector checks every elevation, the trim and the eavestroughs, and photographs what needs attention.
2. Written estimate. A clear scope covering material, trim, insulation and any wall repairs, whether it is insurance work or private work.
3. Scheduling. We order material and book a start date that suits you and the weather.
4. Installation. We remove damaged siding, check the sheathing and house wrap, then install new siding and trim.
5. Clean-up and walkthrough. We haul away debris, sweep for nails and review the finished job with you.

Siding FAQs
How much does new siding cost in Calgary?
Installed vinyl siding typically runs about $6 to $10 per square foot in Calgary; fibre cement, engineered wood, stucco and stone cost more. The total depends on wall area, trim, removal of old siding and access. Our vinyl siding cost guide breaks it down.
Can you replace only the damaged siding?
Usually. Vinyl panels unlock and can be replaced one at a time, and fibre cement and SmartSide boards can be cut out and repainted. Matching faded or discontinued siding is the main limit.
Which siding holds up best to hail?
Fibre cement and stone veneer generally resist hail better than vinyl, and engineered wood sits in between. No siding is hail-proof, so installation details and insurance coverage matter too. Compare vinyl and Hardiboard.
Does insurance cover hail-damaged siding?
Many Alberta policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, but deductibles, depreciation and coverage vary, so check with your insurer. We document the damage and work with your adjuster.
Can siding be installed in winter?
Yes, with care. Vinyl is more brittle in the cold, so it is cut and fastened with extra attention to expansion gaps, and paint and sealants on fibre cement and engineered wood need suitable temperatures. We will tell you upfront if waiting makes more sense.
