Vinyl siding has become the most common residential siding product due to its low maintenance properties.

Vinyl installed along with foam exterior insulation material can be energy efficient. It also resists rot and withstands many undesirable weather conditions. But like many other materials it can certainly sustain damage from hail storms.

The Siding of a house is just as important as the roof. It’s also the component of a house that shows the most, has a great ability to promote energy efficiency, and is the most aesthetic feature of a home.

Vinyl siding is often cracked and broken during hail storms.

In Alberta the insurance industry has lots of experience in dealing with siding claims due to hail and wind damage. While we cannot give you insurance advice we can certainly repair any damages your home may have sustained.

From our experience we notice that most policies provide conditions in the coverage. For example, if your roof or siding was close to reaching its life expectancy before the damage occurred, you might not receive the full replacement cost. As well, depreciation may be applied for wear and tear.

If you aren’t sure whether you are protected or not, it’s always best to call your insurance provider for verification.

Why Vinyl Siding Works for Calgary Homes

  • Low maintenance. No painting, staining or sealing. A rinse with a garden hose each spring is usually all it needs.
  • Moisture and rot resistance. Vinyl does not rot or swell when a chinook melts snow against your walls and it refreezes overnight.
  • Energy efficiency. Installed over rigid foam insulation, vinyl siding helps cut heat loss through the walls during long Calgary winters.
  • Value. It is one of the most affordable siding options to install, and single panels can often be replaced.

The trade-off is impact resistance. Vinyl becomes more brittle in cold weather, and large hail or wind-driven debris can crack, split or punch holes in it. Signs Your Vinyl Siding Needs Repair or Replacement

  • Cracked, split or holed panels, usually on the walls that faced the storm
  • Loose, buckled or warped panels, or pieces blown off in high wind
  • Chalky, faded or blotchy colour on sun-exposed walls
  • Gaps at corners, J-channel or around windows where water can get behind the siding

Siding repair or siding replacement?

If damage is limited to a few panels and matching siding is still available, a repair is usually the sensible choice. When damage is spread across several walls, the siding is near the end of its life, or the colour and profile can no longer be matched, replacing whole elevations or the entire house is often better value.

How Much Does Vinyl Siding Cost in Calgary?

Installed vinyl siding in Calgary typically runs about $6 to $10 per square foot, depending on panel grade, insulation, how much trim and detail the house has, and whether old siding has to be removed first. Repairs are priced by scope. For a fuller breakdown, read what it costs to install new vinyl siding on a Calgary home.

Hail Damage to Vinyl Siding

Calgary sits in Canada’s hail alley, and siding is often damaged in the same storm as the roof, so have both inspected together. Before you call your insurer, our exterior inspection checklist can help, and you can report a claim to us online. Learn more about our hail damage and wind damage repairs.

Areas We Serve

We install and repair vinyl siding in Calgary and nearby communities. Cochrane’s strong westerly winds and the open acreages of Rocky View County are hard on siding, so we pay extra attention to fastening there. For condo complexes and commercial buildings, see commercial siding. Choose your area for local details.

Vinyl Siding FAQ

Can you replace just a few damaged vinyl siding panels?

Yes, in most cases. Vinyl panels interlock, so we can unlock and replace damaged pieces without stripping the whole wall. The main limit is matching colour and profile on older or faded siding.

Is vinyl siding a good choice for Calgary’s climate?

It handles moisture, freeze–thaw cycles and temperature swings well and needs very little upkeep. Its weak point is impact from large hail, especially in cold weather. Thicker or insulated panels improve that.

Can vinyl siding be installed in winter?

It can, with care. Vinyl is more brittle in the cold, so it has to be cut and fastened with extra attention to expansion gaps. We schedule around the weather and will tell you upfront if waiting makes more sense.

Will insurance cover hail-damaged siding?

Many Alberta policies cover sudden hail and wind damage, but coverage, depreciation and deductibles vary. Check with your insurer. We can inspect, document the damage and work with your adjuster.
